About us

We conduct research and build tools to enable others to do the same.

The Media Cloud project began in 2011 at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. It was developed to answer questions about the influence of citizen bloggers on digital news.

From there, it was incubated at the MIT Media Lab in the Center for Civic Media, until the closure of CCM in 2020. During this time, the tool expanded to include global news media from nearly every country in the world.

Today, the Media Cloud project is a consortium collaboration between University of Massachusetts Amherst (PI: Ethan Zuckerman), Northeastern University (PI: Rahul Bhargava), and the Media Ecosystems Analysis Group (PI: Fernando Bermejo). The most recent versions of the tools include multi-platform search, allowing for broader study of media ecosystems.
